Exercise During Pregnancy

Each of the following exercises is designed to develop the muscles around your trunk and pelvis, as well as the muscles of your arms and legs.

Exercise helps strengthen the muscles needed for labor and delivery. It also helps reduce backaches, swelling, and constipation.

Strengthening your arm muscles will help you lift and hold your baby.

These exercises may be done throughout your entire pregnancy, but they should be avoided if you begin to have any pain.

Report any unusual or unexpected symptoms to your healthcare provider.

QUADRUPED ARM AND LEG RAISE

Get down on your hands and knees. Tighten your abdominal muscles to stiffen your spine. While keeping your abdominals tight, raise one arm and the opposite leg away from you.

Hold this position for 5 seconds. Lower your arm and leg slowly and alternate sides.

Do this 10 times on each side.

MODIFIED PUSH-UP

Get onto your hands and knees, with your hands directly below your shoulders. Slowly bend your arms and lower yourself toward the floor, being careful to keep your spine straight.

When you can do 2 sets of 15 easily, do this with your feet off the floor. Gradually progress to doing regular push-ups with your legs out straight.

LUNGE

Stand and take a large step forward with your right leg. Dip your left knee down toward the floor and bend your right leg. Return to the starting position.

Repeat the exercise stepping forward with the left leg and dipping your right leg down toward the floor.
Do 3 sets of 10 on each side.

WALL SQUAT

Stand with your back, shoulders, and head against a wall and look straight ahead. Keep your shoulders relaxed and your feet 1 foot away from the wall and a shoulder's width apart.

Keeping your head against the wall, slide down the wall. Lower your buttocks toward the floor until your thighs are almost parallel to the floor.

Hold this position for 10 seconds. Make sure to tighten your thigh muscles as you slowly slide back up to the starting position.

Do 3 sets of 10. Increasing the amount of time you are in the lowered position helps strengthen your quadriceps muscles.

HEEL RAISE

Balance yourself while standing behind a chair or counter. Using the chair to help you, raise your body up onto your toes and hold for 5 seconds. Then slowly lower yourself down without holding onto the chair. (Keep holding onto the chair or counter if you need to.)

Repeat 10 times. Do 3 sets of 10. Rest 30 seconds between sets.

ROWING EXERCISE

Close middle of elastic tubing in a door or wrap tubing around an immovable object. Hold 1 end in each hand.

Sit in a chair, bend your arms 90 degrees, and hold one end of the tubing in each hand. Keep your forearms vertical and your elbows at shoulder level and bent to 90 degrees. Pull backward on the band and squeeze your shoulder blades together.

Do 3 sets of 10.

THORACIC EXTENSION

While sitting in a chair, clasp both arms behind your head. Gently arch backward and look up toward the ceiling.

Repeat 10 times. Do this several times each day.

ARM SLIDE ON WALL

Sit or stand with your back against a wall and your elbows and wrists against the wall. Slowly slide your arms upward as high as you can while keeping your elbows and wrists against the wall.

Do 3 sets of 10.

SHOULDER ABDUCTION

Stand with your arms at your sides. Rest your palms against your sides. Hold a 2 to 4-pound weight in each hand. Keeping your arms straight, lift your arms out to the side and toward the ceiling.

Hold this position for 5 seconds and then slowly bring your arms down. Repeat 10 times.

BICEPS CURL

Stand and hold a 5- to 8-pound weight in your hand. If you do not have a weight use a soup can or hammer. Bend your elbow and bring your hand (palm up) toward your shoulder.

Hold 5 seconds. Slowly straighten your arm and return to your starting position. Repeat on the other side. Do 3 sets of 10.

  •  Another important exercise during pregnancy is the Kegels exercise. It strengthens your pelvic muscles. You can do Kegels anywhere--while you sit at a desk, wait for a bus, wash dishes, drive a car, wait in line, or watch TV. No one will know you are doing them. Here's how you do them:
  • You can feel the muscles that need to be exercised by squeezing the muscles in your genital area. It might help to pretend you are stopping a flow of urine or trying to stop from passing gas.
  • Tighten these muscles and hold for 3 to 5 seconds. Then relax the muscles completely. Tighten and relax these muscles at least 10 to 20 times a day. Do these sets of exercises 10 times a day.

One of the best things you can do for yourself and your unborn child during pregnancy is exercise. There are numerous studies that show that women who exercise during pregnancy are more likely to have easy labor and deliveries and faster recoveries.

Before you start any exercise program during pregnancy it is essential that you consult with your healthcare provider. For some women it may be more dangerous than beneficial to exercise during pregnancy.

Once you get the go ahead from your doctor, you can embark on an exercise program that is suitable to your stage in pregnancy.

BENEFITS:

  • Exercise helps combat fatigue
  • Exercise helps minimize back pain because it helps strengthen back muscles
  • Exercise can help promote a smaller amount of fat gain during pregnancy
  • Exercise provides an exceptional form of stress relief
  • Women who exercising during pregnancy are less likely to experience difficult labors
  • Women who exercise during pregnancy are more likely to return to their pre-pregnancy weight faster and recover more quickly after delivery

BEST EXERCISES

1)     Walking
2)     Swimming
3)     Stretching
4)     Yoga
5)     Pilates
6)     Dancing
7)     Stationary Cycling
8)     Low Impact Prenatal Aerobics

STRENGTH-TRAINING EXERCISE DURING PREGNANCY

Perform all exercises at least three times a week, on alternate days, on a firm (but not too hard) surface, such as an exercise mat. Perform them in the following order.

Be sure to breathe normally during all exercises; don't hold your breath. During abdominal exercises, it may be easier to exhale on exertion, that is, inhale when you are down and exhale briskly as you perform the lift.

The following exercises work all major muscle groups. Don't skip any!

HAMSTRING LIFT

Start with 5 repetitions and increase to 20.

1.     Rest on your hands and knees, with your back flat and abdominal muscles squeezed tightly
    2.      With your foot flexed, extend your left leg straight behind you.

    3.      Keeping your back flat, lift your left leg up until it is level with your back. At the same time,                shift your weight to your left arm.

    4.      Lower your leg. Repeat several times.

    5.      Change sides and repeat, shifting your weight to your right arm.

INNER THIGH LIFT:

Start with 5 repetitions; increase to 20.

OUTER THIGH LIFT:

Start with 5 repetitions; increase to 20.

1.      Lie on your left side, your head resting on your hand, your body aligned. For balance, bend                  your bottom leg.

2.      Slowly lift your top leg straight up and slightly back. Hold for a slow count of 5, then lower                slowly.

3.      After you've completed your repetitions, change sides.

CHEST MUSCLE EXERCISE:

Start with 5 to 10 repetitions; increase to 20.

1.      Clasp your hands in front of you at chest level.

2.      Press palms together for a slow count of 5.

3.      Lock your fingers and pull against your fingers for a slow count of 5. Do not hold your breath.            (This stage of the exercise strengthens muscles in the upper back.)

PELVIC ROCK ON ALL FOURS:

Start with 5 repetitions; increase to 20.

1.      Rest on your hands and knees, your back straight and your knees comfortably apart.

2.      Slowly arch your lower back, lift your abdomen, and tuck your pelvis under (as if a string                    attached to your spine is pulling you upward). Hold for a slow count of 4.

3.      Slowly return to the starting position-do not allow your back to sag. Repeat the tuck, holding              the tucked position for a full count of 10. Squeeze your pelvic floor at the same time for an                  added benefit.

DIAGONAL KNEE AND ARM REACH:

Do 5 to 10 repetitions. Caution: Do not perform this exercise after the first trimester of pregnancy.

1.      Lie flat on your back, your knees bent and feet flat. Place your hands either behind your head or          across your chest.

2.      Flatten your lower back to the floor, then raise your head (straight up toward the ceiling, not                with your chin down on your chest), shoulders, right arm, and left knee all together slowly. Do            not pull on your neck!

3.      Slowly return to the starting position.

4.      Repeat, raising your left arm and right knee.

PLIES:

Start with 5 repetitions, gradually increasing to 20.

1.      Stand with your feet about two feet apart and toes turned comfortably out.

2.      Slowly bend your knees, keeping your back flat. Never lower your buttocks past your knees.                Keep your knees over your toes-don't let them roll in.

3.      Rise slowly, concentrating on the leg muscles as you push upward. Keep your heels flat during            the entire movement.

To advance the exercise, stay down for 15 to 30 seconds, then rise slowly.

SIT-BACK:

Start with 5 repetitions; increase to 20.

1.      Sit with the soles of your feet together and comfortably away from your body, your arms held in          front of you parallel to the floor.

2.      Tuck your chin to your chest and curl back slowly until you are halfway down, keeping the                  sides of your feet on the floor and your back rounded. (Do not attempt this with a straight                    back!)

3.      Return to the sitting position. Exhale as you curl back. (If you find this exercise easy to                        perform, do the exercise with your arms crossed over your chest. ) Do not try to curl back to the          floor and up again.

CURL-UP:

Perform 5 to 20 repetitions. Caution: Do not perform this exercise after the first trimester of pregnancy.

1.      Lie on your back, with your knees bent and your feet close to your buttocks. Press your lower              back to the floor. Inhale slowly and deeply.

2.      As you slowly exhale, lift your head and shoulders. Do not lift your lower back off of the floor!          Perform this exercise slowly (no jerky movements), and do not throw your head forward! Relax          the jaw and neck muscles. The lift comes from the shoulders and should be straight up, your                face toward the ceiling.

3.      Slowly return to the starting position; inhale as you do so.

PELVIC FLOOR SQUEEZE (KEGEL EXERCISE)

Do 3 or 4 sets at one time, 5 times per day.

1.      Sit or stand comfortably (you can perform this exercise in most positions). To make this exercise more challenging, place your legs farther apart.

2.      Tighten the pelvic floor as if to lift the internal organs or to stop urination in midstream. Hold as tightly as possible for a slow count of 5 (be sure to breathe).

3.      Relax completely.

Note:

Because these muscles fatigue easily, repeat in sets of 3 or 4 squeezes throughout the day anytime, anywhere. Concentrate on the sensations of tension and lifting, relaxing, and lowering within the pelvis.

TRUNK ROLL:

Do 5 to 10 repetitions. Caution: Do not perform this exercise after the first month of pregnancy.

1.      Lie on your back, your knees bent and arms on the floor straight out at your side. Lift your feet off the floor, or keep them flat on the floor.

2.      Keeping your shoulders down and your knees together, roll your legs to the left, touching your left leg on the floor.

3.      Roll your legs back to the starting point, then to the right. Make sure your knees are not bent too close to the chest. Keep the movement smooth and don't rush.

PUSH-AWAY

Start with 5 repetitions; increase to 20.

1.      Stand facing a wall, with your palms on the wall slightly farther apart than shoulder width. Place your feet about two to three feet from the wall. Hold your arms and body straight.

2.      Lean toward the wall, allowing your arms to bend. Touch one cheek to the wall.

3.      Straighten your arms, pushing your body (still aligned) away from the wall. Do not arch your back. Keep your palms on the wall at all times.

If these exercises look great but you still aren't motivated, maybe you need to attend an exercise class.

When Did I Get Pregnant

When did I get pregnant? This is a question that all mothers have thought at least once at some point. Pregnancy represents a reason of joy for most new mothers.

As soon as the big news are found out, the curiosity and desire to know more about the evolution of the baby starts.

A lot of mothers are often asking themselves how many weeks of pregnancy they have or how they should calculate they age of their pregnancy.

The calculation of the pregnancy age is made in a few different ways. The age of the pregnancy can be a gestational age estimated since the moment of the conception or a chronological age estimated since the first day of the last menstrual cycle.

Typically, the gestational age is estimated starting with the moment of the sexual contact from which the fertilization resulted. The chronological age of the pregnancy is estimated since the first day of the last period, but when there are cases of menstruation during pregnancy, this sort of calculation isn`t useful.

When Did I Get Pregnant Based on Ultrasound?

A medical ultrasound (also known as ultrasonography or diagnostic sonography) is made in the 20th week of pregnancy, but it can be made even earlier, if there is more than one fetus or if you aren`t sure of your pregnancy.

  • The Gestational Age: you should count the weeks starting with the moment when the sexual    contact has taken place;
  • The Chronological Age: you should count the weeks starting with the first day of the last period;
  • The Biometric Age: the fetal biometric parameters can reveal the ultrasound scan age.

What Day Did I Get Pregnant?

If questions like “How do I know when I got pregnant?” pop up in your mind, you can calculate your due date by taking in consideration your first day of the last menstrual period, but for this to happen you generally need to have a regular period of 28 days. From that day you`ll need to add 9 months and 10 days (by European calculation) or 9 months and 7 days (by American calculation).

A normal pregnancy is considered the one with the duration of 37 to 42 weeks. Along with the estimation of the gestational age there are also some required tests that should be made, such as urinalysis, HIV, Torch system, VDRL and a complete blood count.

In any case, the percentage of women who give birth in the same day as the calculated due date is very small. However, it`s important for you to give birth anywhere around 37 to 42 weeks and not necessarily to give birth on the calculated due date.

The conception date can also be found if we know the age of the pregnancy in months which can be counted as it follows:

1st month – 1-4 weeks;
2nd month – 5-8 weeks;
3rd month – 9-13 weeks;
4th month – 14-17 weeks;
5th month – 18-22 weeks;
6th month – 23-27 weeks;
7th month – 28-31 weeks;
8th month – 32-35 weeks;
9th month – 36-40 weeks;

When There`s a Period over the Pregnancy

If the period still appears even you are sure you`re pregnant, then it`s harder to calculate the gestational age based on the menstrual cycles and, in this case, you should take into account the pregnancy`s age established by ultrasound. Depending on the device and the experience of the doctor, some small differences of appreciation of around 2 weeks may exist.

It`s important to determine the dynamic ultrasound assessment if you want to establish the gestational age in such a case. This offers data even in cases of menstruation during pregnancy.

Talk to the doctor if you have any concern regarding the difference between the gestational, chronological or biometrical age, if they exist.

How Many Weeks Does a Normal Pregnancy Have?

Normally, a pregnancy has 40 weeks. However, the pregnancy is at term between the 38 and 42 weeks. A birth that takes takes place before the 38th week is considered a premature birth, and one that takes place after the 42nd week is considered a postterm pregnancy.

Premature Birth

A newborn is considered to be born prematurely when the birth takes place between weeks 24 and 38. Chances of survival before the week 24 are very little, but they increase with the age of the pregnancy.

The risk in such situations is for the baby not to be fully developed so he is able to survive life outside the womb, reason for which doctors take special measures.

The vital signs of premature babies are monitored and the little ones are kept in incubators. They are fed artificially, intravenously and they are helped to breath by connecting them to medical devices.

Postterm Birth

The newborn is considered postmature if the birth takes place after 42 weeks of pregnancy. Still, there are a lot of doctors who want to eliminate any kind of risk and after 41 weeks they recommend Caesarean birth.

In case of a postterm pregnancy, the risk of death is higher. The lesions that occur in the placenta in this case decrease the blood supply to the fetus and may appear fetal hypoxia, meaning lack of oxygen in the brain.

Still, How to Calculate Conception Date?

Because most pregnant women don`t really know the way the gestational age is calculated, they are confused most of the times when they get this information from the gynecologist.

The age of the pregnancy is simple to calculate because it starts with the first day of the last period, and it`s expressed in the weeks that passed since then until present, also known as weeks of amenorrhea (how many weeks passed since the period never came.)when did I get pregnant exactly

The total duration of the pregnancy is of 40 weeks of amenorrhea. Keep in mind that a month has only 4 weeks (28, 30 or 31 days). So, don`t split the age of the pregnancy, calculated in weeks at 4 until finding out the months of pregnancy because you`ll get wrong results.

Here`s how the calculation is actually made:

At the date of the last period it`s added the number 10 which represents an average value of the moment in which the ovulation takes places – when the woman can get pregnant. From the obtained number it`s calculated the weeks until the present time, so you`ll get the number of the week in which you are pregnant. Without forgetting to add the initial 10 days to the date of the last period, we`ll also find out the probably due date by counting 9 months from the date just found.

If even after reading the above information you still ask yourself “When did I get pregnant?”, maybe it`s best to get in touch with your gynecologist. He`ll be the only one who can clear things out for you.

9 Weeks Pregnant With Twins

Pregnant With Twins? Check Out My Twin Bump Week By Week

Oh God. Just how enormous am I going to get? What the hell is my skin going to look like? Where am I going to put TWO babies? Will I have one of those long sticky-out-y ‘sausage’ bumps? (They exist!

Long long bumps that just keep on going). Just a few of the panic induced thoughts that whizzed through my head when I found out I was pregnant with twins

My advice for pregnant twin mums to be is not to google twin bumps or compare yourself to singleton bumps. Every bump and pregnancy is totally different. But I’m not one to take my own advice.

I obsessively googled twin bumps every single week. And of course took weekly photos (well, almost every week) to track my progress.

I was so scared about what I would look like. And if I’d ever recover… but my post partum body is a post for another day…

Looking back now I find it absolutely amazing that the human body can do what it can. Finding room for two nearly 6lb babies inside?

Absolutely bonkers! I didn’t start showing much until around week 18 and then I had no chance, my bump had a mind of its’ own and seemed to expand before my very eyes.

I legitimately thought that my bump wasn’t all that big for a twin bump, even near to the end (I gave birth at 37 weeks), but since giving birth I’ve had no end of people telling me

"You really were huge Ursula, just didn’t want to tell you.” Fair enough, no pregnant woman wants to hear she’s huge. Even though it was definitely, kinda true!

I put on 16kg during my pregnancy which is pretty much 3 stone. Check out my bump progression below. I’ll forever be mourning my ‘four weeks pregnant’ flat belly pic right at the start. I don’t know if that kind of tone will ever exist for me anymore!

8 WEEKS PREGNANT WITH TWINS: READ ALL ABOUT IT

Read about your pregnancy from week 7+0 to 7+6. You're now 8 weeks pregnant with twins

Your children are growing and developing rapidly. If you get a scan, when you’re 8 weeks pregnant with twins, you’ll be able to see two miniature babies inside of you with round heads and arms and legs. At the end of the week they’ll measure about 1,6 cm – the size of a pinky nail.

How are my babies developing?

Skeletal structures are developing with the formation of spines, arms and legs. In the beginning, the skeletal structures start out as flexible cartilage, but already in week 8 they begin to ossify, turning into harder bone. The paddle-formed buds, that are developing into arms, have grown. Wrists and fingers can be glimpsed.

The paddle-formed buds, that are developing into legs, will form into thighs, lower legs, feet and toes. The babies bodies are becoming more erect and their arms and legs drift apart to reach their final positions.

How might I feel?

When you’re 8 weeks pregnant with twins, you may already have experienced several pregnancy related symptoms. However, one more can present itself just around this time.

You may begin to notice pain or tenderness in your abdomen. This is called round ligament pain. Round ligaments surround your uterus in your pelvis. As your uterus grows during pregnancy, the ligaments stretch and thicken to accommodate and support it.

These changes may occasionally cause pain. This is completely normal and nothing to worry about.

What do I need to remember?

If you experience severe pain, cramping, bleeding or an increase in pressure in the pelvic area, you should call your health care provider immediately, as this has nothing to do with round ligament pain.

Be aware that you – were you not pregnant – were suppose to have your second period around this time. You may therefore experience minor spotting, without anything being wrong. Also, don’t forget to take a multivitamin with 400 micrograms of folic acid.

Nausea and Morning Sickness During Pregnancy

If only morning sickness was just relegated to the mornings! Here's some help for every woman coping with nausea during pregnancy, especially during the early months.

Causes of Morning Sickness:

Sensitivity
Stress
Fatigue
First time pregnancy status
Genetics

You're sailing along on your early pregnancy adventure at (so far, so good, you're thinking — just a touch of tenderness around the nipples, a little urinary frequency, a few blue veins across your chest, but nothing you can't handle).

Until one day, you wake with a strangely icky feeling in the pit of your stomach. Could it be seasickness? Sure does feel like it (that, or the worst hangover you've ever had). Well, in these pregnant parts, it's called morning sickness…and chances are you'll be bunking with it for the next few weeks.

What’s going on in there today? Download the What To Expect app for week-by-week updates, news, tips from experts and more!

WHEN DOES MORNING SICKNESS START?

If you're among the estimated three in four women who suffer from symptoms related to this misnamed malady in the first trimester of pregnancy, you already know the bad news:

Although that nauseous, queasy feeling in your stomach often starts when the sun rises, it can hit at any time of the day or night. Also sometimes known as nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP), symptoms typically start around week 4 to week 9 of pregnancy and peak somewhere between week 7 and week 12.

And since that sense of smell is extra-keen in a newly pregnant woman, morning sickness causes many women have strong aversions to certain foods and smells, too.

The good news: For the vast majority of expectant moms, the worst of it is over between weeks 12 to 14 (though a few women continue to experience symptoms into the second trimester, and a very few, particularly those expecting multiples, may suffer some well into the third).

Even better news: Though morning sickness might make you feel lousy, it’s not harming your baby.

WHAT CAUSES MORNING SICKNESS?

No one knows for sure — though there’s no shortage of theories. It could be triggered by the increased level of the pregnancy hormone hCG (which peaks around the time morning sickness is worst).

Rising levels of estrogen and progesterone levels relax the muscles of the digestive tract, making digestion less efficient. The rapid stretching of the uterine muscles likely doesn’t help, nor do other body changes (such as that keener sense of smell or the metallic taste many women experience during pregnancy). Skipping meals can contribute to an empty and nauseous feeling as well.

Not all pregnant women experience morning sickness — and not in the same way, either. Some have only occasionally queasy moments, others feel queasy round the clock but never vomit, others vomit once in a while, and still others vomit frequently. There are probably a few reasons for these variations:

Hormone levels. Higher-than-average levels (as when a woman is carrying multiples) can increase morning sickness; lower levels may minimize or eliminate it (though women with normal hormone levels may also experience little or no morning sickness).

Sensitivity

Some brains have a nausea command post that’s more sensitive than others, which means they’re more likely to respond to hormones and other triggers of pregnancy queasiness.

If you have a sensitive command center (you always get carsick or seasick, for instance), you’re more likely to have more severe nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. Never have a queasy day ordinarily? You’re less likely to have lots of them when you’re expecting.

Stress

It’s well known that emotional stress can trigger gastrointestinal upset, so it’s not surprising that symptoms of morning sickness tend to worsen when stress strikes.

Fatigue

Physical or mental fatigue can also exacerbate the symptoms of morning sickness (conversely, severe morning sickness can increase fatigue).

First-time pregnancy status

Morning sickness is more common and tends to be more severe in first pregnancies, which supports the idea that both physical and emotional factors may be involved.

Physically the novice pregnant body is less prepared for the onslaught of hormones and other changes it’s experiencing than one that’s been there, done that. Emotionally, first timers are more likely to be subject to the kinds of anxieties and fears that can turn a stomach – while women in subsequent pregnancies may be distracted from their nausea by the demands of caring for older children.

(Generalities never hold true for every expectant mom, though, and some women are queasier in subsequent pregnancies than they were in their first).

Genetics

Women whose mothers had morning sickness have been shown to be more likely to develop the condition themselves.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

In the short term, not eating very much isn't a problem: Your baby is fortunately teeny tiny when morning sickness is at its worst and doesn't have very much in the way of nutritional needs yet. (By the time he or she does, you'll almost certainly have your appetite back, in spades!)

Even women who have such a hard time keeping food down that they actually lose weight during the first trimester aren’t hurting their babies, as long as they make up for the lost weight in later months. Keep an eye on your urine, though: It should be clear or light colored, like straw, not dark (which is a sign to drink up).

However if you’re not able to keep anything down, including fluids, it may be a symptom of hyperemesis gravidarum, a more serious condition which affects up to 2 percent of women with morning sickness.

If your nausea is continuous and severe and you vomit several times a day, make sure to see your doctor: You may require additional treatment to protect both you and your baby.

WHAT YOU CAN TO EASE MORNING SICKNESS

Doesn't make you feel any better that you and most of your belly mates are all sailing the SS Queasy together (especially as your head is busy bobbing in the toilet)? Maybe the following nausea-nipping tips will:

  • Stick to foods that appeal for now. Even if it's the same foods over and over and over again. Avoid eating (or seeing, or smelling, or even thinking about) any dishes that trigger the queasies (spicy and acidic foods may be particularly challenging, as well as anything with a strong aroma).

Chances are you'll be able to find a few healthy foods that you can keep down (or at least contemplate coming fork-to-face with) — and that will take care of most of your nutritional requirements until a more varied diet becomes palatable.

Choose only sweet foods if they’re all you can tolerate (get your vitamin A and protein from peaches and yogurt at dinner instead of broccoli and chicken). Or select only savories if they’re your ticket to a less tumultuous tummy (have reheated pizza for breakfast instead of cereal). Don't worry too much about getting your

Daily Dozen in the short term, since your baby (and his or her needs) is pretty tiny now. And remember, no one food has a monopoly on any one nutrient — so if you turn green at the thought of anything green, get your vitamin fix from a sweet, juicy cantaloupe instead.

  • Eat early Morning sickness doesn’t wait for you to get up in the morning. In fact, nausea is most likely to strike when you’re running on empty, as you are after a long night’s sleep.

That’s because when you haven’t eaten in a while, the acids churning around inside your empty tummy have nothing to digest but your stomach lining — which, not surprisingly, increases queasiness. To head off heaving, stock your nightstand full of trail mix, crackers, and cold cereal to munch on first thing in the morning.
It’s a good idea to even have a little nocturnal nibble if (or rather, when) you wake up in the middle of the night to pee.
  • and right before bed. For the same reason, try eating a light snack high in protein and complex carbs (a banana muffin and a glass of milk, string cheese and a handful of dried apricots) just before you go to sleep to help ensure a happier tummy when you wake up.
  • Be a grazer. The idea is to keep your belly a little bit filled all the time (don't overfill it, and don't let it get completely empty). Eat six to eight small meals throughout the day rather than three large squares — again, when your tummy's empty, you’re more likely to feel nauesous. Plus, smaller meals are easier to digest — and less likely to trigger the queasies (or to overflow via vomiting). And don’t leave your house without a stash of snacks that your tummy can handle (dried fruit and nuts, granola bars, dry cereal, crackers, soy chips or pretzels).
  • Try the combo. No, not the double cheeseburger combo (that's the last thing you need right now) — the protein-and-complex-carbohydrate (dried apricots, crackers, dry whole-grain toast) pregnancy diet combo. Taken separately, these food groups are both good for baby. Taken together, they're good for baby — and keeping nausea at bay.
  • Don't go overboard with fat. The more you steer clear of greasy foods, the happier your tummy will be. Not only are fats hard to digest, but they can send your nervous system into warp speed ahead, aggravating your nausea.
  • Tread gingerly. It's true what the old wives (and midwives) have been saying for centuries: Ginger can be good for what ails a queasy pregnant woman. It’s been shown in more than one scientific study to reduce nausea and vomiting in pregnancy.

So stock up on staples such as ginger snaps, real ginger ale, ginger tea, ginger candies, ginger biscuits, crystallized ginger or ginger drinks. Use ginger when you’re cooking (ginger carrot soup, ginger muffins), and infuse your tea with it.

Even the smell of fresh ginger (cut open a knob and take a whiff) may quell the queasies. It'll help put a damper on nausea.
  • When life gives you morning sickness, make lemonade. Another trick of the queasy trade: lemons. Many women find the smell — and taste — of lemons comforting. Sour sucking candies or a sniff of freshly-cut lemon may be your ticket to relief.
  • Switch off. Often, what starts out as a comfort food (it’s the only thing you can keep down, so you eat it 24/7) becomes associated with nausea — and actually starts to trigger it.

If you’re so sick of crackers that they’re actually beginning to make you sick, switch off to another comforting carb (maybe it’ll be Cheerios or watermelon next).
  • Drink up. Making sure you get your eight glasses of fluid a day is especially crucial if vomiting is leaving you high, dry, and dehydrated. Can’t stand water? Try sucking on Popsicles. Some women find that drinking and eating at the same sitting puts too much strain on their digestive tract; if this is true for you, try taking fluids between meals.

If you’re finding liquids are easier to get down when you’re green, drink your vitamins and nutrients with soups, smoothies and shakes (many women find icy cold fluids and foods are easier to get down, too).
  • Smell (and see) no evil. Thanks to a much more sensitive sense of smell, pregnant women often find once appetizing aromas suddenly offensive — and offensive ones downright sickening. So stay away from smells that trigger nausea — whether it’s the sausage and eggs your spouse likes to make on the weekends or the aftershave of his that used to make you head over heels (but now makes you head for the toilet). Steer clear, too, of foods that you can’t stand the sight of (raw chicken is a common culprit).
  • Supplement. Take your prenatal vitamin to compensate for nutrients you may not be getting, at whatever time of day you’re least likely to cuck it back up. Make sure it's iron-free, at least until the morning sickness during pregnancy passes.

Take it with a meal, and consider a coated, powder or chewable one, which may agree with your stomach more. Afraid that vitamins will only make matters worse — besides being hard to choke down? Actually, that one-a-day can decrease nausea symptoms (especially if you take a slow-release vitamin that’s higher in quease-combatting vitamin B6).

If your symptoms are particularly rough, ask your practitioner about taking a vitamin B6 supplement.
  • Try Sea-bands. These 1-inch wide bands worn on both arms put pressure on acupressure points in the inner wrist. They cause no side effects and are widely available at drug and health food stores and have been shown to lessen pregnancy nausea.
  • Take time to relax. Try any of the classic stress-reduction techniques, like meditation and visualization or prenatal yoga. And as always, hit the sack for as many hours as you can clock every night.
  • Use complimentary approaches. There are a wide variety of complementary medical approaches, such as acupuncture, acupressure, biofeedback or hypnosis, that can help minimize the symptoms of morning sickness — and they’re all worth a try.
  • Treat your mouth well. Brush your teeth or rinse your mouth after each bout of vomiting, as well as after each meal. (Ask you dentist to recommend a good rinse.) Not only will this help keep your mouth fresh and reduce nausea, it will decrease the risk of damage to teeth that can occur when bacteria feast on regurgitated residue in your mouth.
  • Ask your doctor about medication. If your morning sickness is severe, you may want to talk to your doctor about taking an FDA-approved drug to treat nausea and vomiting of pregnancy.

You'll likely be prescribed to take two tablets daily at bedtime, and if your symptoms are not mitigated, your dose can be increased to a maximum of four tablets daily with the approval of your doctor. Don’t take any medication (traditional or herbal) for morning sickness unless it’s prescribed by your practitioner.

When Does Morning Sickness Start In Pregnancy?

It is certainly one of the beautiful moments of your life when you decide to bring your little one to this world. During pregnancy, every woman undergoes some changes.

Even though there are many things happening around when a female is pregnant, I am here to tell you about the so-called “Morning Sickness”.

If you were pregnant earlier, you might know what it is but if you are preparing to become a new mom, you should soon experience it. So, what is this morning sickness all about and when does morning sickness start in pregnancy?

This is something this article is going to explain you clearly.

Morning sickness is one of the most common medical conditions that signal early pregnancy. Now, how bad this morning sickness would be varies entirely from one pregnant woman to the other.

Morning sickness is otherwise called “Nausea Gravidarum”, NVP (Nausea/Vomiting Of Pregnancy), Pregnancy Sickness or Emesis Gravidarum.

On an average, this kind of sickness affects more than 50% pregnant women. A woman feels nauseous and tired often. She is seen vomiting at times too. On the other hand, women who use HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) or hormonal contraception might also have symptoms of morning sickness.

Quick Look At The Symptoms Of Morning Sickness

  1. Nausea
  2. Tiredness
  3. Light-headedness
  4. Loss of appetite
  5. Psychological effects like anxiety and depression

The morning sickness symptoms at times can be so severe that a pregnant woman can even suffer from

Weight loss
Dehydration
Alkalosis (Dangerous drop in acidity level of blood)
Hypokalemia (lack of potassium in bloodstream)

A severe morning sickness is otherwise called “Hyperemesis Gravidarum”. However, severe symptoms are rarely seen and is estimated that out of 100, 1 pregnant woman suffers it. Since that you have learnt what morning sickness is all about, you might be curious to read when does morning sickness start in pregnancy? Just read the below section.

When Does Morning Sickness Start?

Do you have any idea as to when does morning sickness start in pregnancy? Any guesses? Well, as the name expresses, morning sickness starts during the “early morning hours”.

The symptoms then gradually improve as the day passes. According to NHS (National Health Service), UK – it is estimated that about 28% women goes through nausea without even vomiting. If vomiting and nausea has to occur, then it usually happens during sixth week of pregnancy.

Now that you have known “when does morning sickness start in pregnancy”, there are few more associated and frequently asked questions on it as well, which I will be explaining below. Read on

When Do You Start Getting Morning Sickness?

Yes, of course, they are in the morning hours but there are few things to note here. In certain cases, women have even experienced them in their second week too. For many females, the early or the initial pregnancy signs is often a “morning sickness”.

On the other hand, there are women who have experienced this sickness improving in their 12th week whereas few experience throughout their pregnancy period. So, the answer to the question when do you start getting morning sickness is not exact. There are different variations and since one pregnant woman is different from the other – the exact period as to when they commence differs.

I hope you are clear with the answer when do you start getting morning sickness. Let us look at one more frequently asked question.

How Early Does Morning Sickness Start?

Though all these questions seem similar to you, there is still a difference and I am sure you are smart enough to understand. So, how early does morning sickness start?

As said earlier, they occur usually in the morning hours and improve as the day goes by. It is a common pregnancy symptom but severity ranges from mild to severe. There are even cases where you will find no proper triggers proving as to why you suffer morning sickness.

The answer to the question how early does morning sickness start is over here. Few women find this sickness worst during early morning hours whereas few complain to be undergoing vomiting and nausea in early evening and late nights too.

I hope you have understood as to when does morning sickness start in pregnancy deeply by now. The article doesn’t end here. There are some more things, which you must know and even I feel it important to write.

What Do Health Experts Have To Say About Morning Sickness?

Most health experts agree to the fact that the symptoms of morning sickness are associated with “pregnancy’s hormonal change”. Due to this particular reason, most pregnant women suffer this sickness around fourth week after conceiving.

To put it in practical terms, it happens when egg implants into the uterus. This is the stage or phase when there is an increase in pregnancy hormones. This is one part whereas on the other side, there are even women reporting that they experience morning sickness before their 4th week (also a basic answer on when does morning sickness start in pregnancy).

This could also mean that HCG (Human Chronic Gonadotrpin) might be linked with its earliest symptoms and even estrogen is said to be a cause.

In most cases, NVP (Nausea and Vomiting in Pregnancy) is undoubtedly a very unpleasant experience but it doesn’t have any health risks on the baby.

Morning sickness is pretty normal for any pregnant woman and thus you don’t have to be worried much. You will be shocked to read the fact on what certain studies say.

Morning sickness often bodes to a better and healthier pregnancy. Yeah, in fact, with morning sickness, there are evidences of low rates in stillbirths and miscarriages when compared to other pregnant women with no vomiting or nausea.

But excess or prolonged vomiting can rob the nutrition required for your baby inside. There are even chances that your baby comes out being underweight.

Possible Morning Sickness Causes

So, what exactly causes morning sickness? Well, this is still a mystery. However, it is assumed that combination of metabolic and physical factors play a very significant role. This includes

  • High estrogen hormone levels
  • Blood pressure fluctuations and in particular – low blood pressure
  • Altered metabolism
  • Enormous chemical and physical changes, which pregnancy triggers
  • Morning Sickness & Your Baby

After suffering with morning sickness symptoms, as a mother now, you would certainly be concerned about your baby residing inside.

That frequent tiredness, vomiting and being ill most of the time makes you get scared with a question “what if this harms my baby?” Retching and vomiting might definitely strain your abdominal muscles & even cause localized aching as well as soreness.

Nevertheless, these physical sicknesses will never harm your baby at all. Fetus will still be cushioned perfectly inside the sac with amniotic fluid.

Is Morning Sickness Common?

Yes, this certainly is a common sickness occurring at the early stages of pregnancy. About 50% women experience both vomiting and nausea whereas few experience only nausea but no vomiting.

Recommended Treatments

If you suffer morning sickness then your midwife or GP initially recommends you to try changing your daily diet, as this should easily lessen the symptoms in no time. Generally, these include

Have lot of rest since tiredness can again make your nausea worse

If you are sick then the first thing you need to follow during mornings is this: Wake up slowly from bed and if possible, have something healthy like plain biscuit or dry toast before you completely get out of your bed

Drink natural fluids like water, fruit juice or vegetable juice without any artificial flavors added. Don’t just gulp down all at once. Drink slowly. Sip little by little.

This will help you prevent vomiting
Eat small and frequent meals that are rich in carbohydrates (like pasta, rice and bread) but low in fats. There are women who can easily manage savory foods like crackers, crisp bread and toasts than spicy or sweet grubs

Avoid having larger meals. This doesn’t mean that you have to starve. Consume smaller but frequent
Stay away from foods that make you sick
Stay away from drinks, which are sweet, tart and cold

You may feel vomiting when you cook. At such times, it is better to get little help of someone near you. If you don’t have anyone to support you around then cook foods that are easy and which doesn’t make you feel sick

Distract yourself and don’t think about it. The more you think, more you feel horrible
Wear clothes that makes you feel comfortable

2 Great Home Remedies To Help

1. Ginger Eases Greatly

There are evidences that ginger or ginger supplements can ease down nausea and vomiting. It is natural and there aren’t any reports showing adverse effects caused after taking ginger in pregnancy.

If you are going with ginger supplements then just make sure that you get from a reputed store. It is also good to have it checked with your pharmacist prior using those supplements. Some find ginger biscuits reducing down nausea. You may try various things in order to know what literally works.

2. Acupressure Works Too

Acupressure on your wrist might also be very effective in lessening the morning sickness symptoms. It helps to lower your nausea. Just wear a special bracelet or band on forearm.

Few researchers suggest that applying pressure on specific body parts makes the brain in releasing chemicals. This in turn helps in reducing vomiting and nausea.

Again, neither this trick will harm you nor there are any reports showing adverse effects after using acupressure in pregnancy.

When To Meet A Doctor?

Morning sickness is quite normal to see in pregnancies but if its severe, then you should know that it’s time to consult with your doctor.

If you vomit & you are not able to keep up what you eat or drink then there are chances that you are malnourished or dehydrated. Apart from this, there are few other things, which easily signal to meet a doctor. These include

  • When you have a dark-colored urine
  • When you don’t pass the urine out even after 8 hours
  • When you are not able to keep up what you eat or drink down
  • When you feel severely tired, sick and weak
  • When you feel as if you are going to faint while standing up
  • When you have severe tummy or abdominal pain
  • When you have high fever (wherein temperature raises to 100.4°F or even above)
  • When you notice blood in your vomit

How To Get Pregnant With Twin Boys

There are many couples who would prefer to have twins rather than a single child when they become pregnant. While there are definitely ways to improve your chances of becoming pregnant with twins, there are also couples who are looking to improve their chances of becoming pregnant with boys as well.

While this may seem as though it is an impossible task, many couples have been able to try a certain methods to help improve their chances of having twins who are boys naturally and some of the best ways are listed below

1. Twins

The first thing that you need to focus on when you’re looking to become pregnant with twin boys is to become pregnant with twins. For some, this is easier to accomplish than others. For example, some families may find that twins run in their family and that they are more likely to become pregnant with twins because of this reason.

However, there are also ways that you can naturally improve your chances of becoming pregnant with twins. For example, adding yams to your diet will help you conceive twins because they contain special nutrients that will help improve your ovulation and give you better chance of hyper ovulation.

Adding additional weight to your body can also help improve your chances of becoming pregnant with twins because it has been shown that additional weight can increase the hormones that are produced by the body that promote twins being conceived.

Age is also a factor when it comes to having twins and women who are older have shown an increased chance of becoming pregnant with twins.

However, age and weight are both a factor when it comes to having issues with fertility and you may find that it is harder to become pregnant at all if you rely on these methods.

2. Boys

The next thing that you need to focus on when you’re looking to have twin boys is increasing your chances of becoming pregnant with boys rather than girls.

Since male sperm is not as strong and has a shorter lifespan female sperm, they also tend to reach the egg faster than female sperm.

For this reason, it is very important that you monitor your ovulation cycle and attempt to have intercourse as close to your scheduled fertile days as possible.

You should avoid having intercourse 3 to 4 days before you ovulate because this will allow the female sperm the time that it needs to reach the egg and fertilize it with girls rather than boys.

It is also a good idea to have intercourse in a position that allows for deep penetration. This will help sperm be as close to the cervix as possible so that the male sperm will have a shorter distance to swim in order to reach the egg.

This coupled with having intercourse at the correct time can help improve your chances of becoming pregnant with twin boys.

Another item that can help improve your chances of becoming pregnant with boys is to avoid eating acidic foods while you’re trying to become pregnant. It has been shown that acidic foods create an environment that can essentially kill off male sperm and make it harder for you to become pregnant with a boy.

By avoiding these types of foods, you will be improving the environment that is necessary for male sperm to survive and thrive so that they have the best chance of reaching the egg and fertilize it.

3. Conclusion

For couples who are trying to become pregnant with twin boys, there are many things that they can do to help improve their chances.

However, both trying to become pregnant with twins and trying to become pregnant with boys is a difficult process and not one that can be guaranteed with any method.

It is important that you relax while you’re trying to become pregnant, and avoid adding the stress of controlling your pregnancy to your life.

The stress that this may create may be enough to keep you from becoming pregnant at all, and if you find that you are overly stressing about attempting to become pregnant with twin boys,

You should work one developing ways to remove the stress from your life. There are many relaxation tips that you can follow to help improve your chances of becoming pregnant, which in turn, may present you with the opportunity that you are looking for.

Natural Ways to Conceive Twins: How to increase your chances of having twins

Naturally conceived twins occur in about 1 out of every 89 births.  Under normal circumstances, your odds of conceiving twins are slim.

Taking fertility medications or undergoing a procedure like IVF can increase your chances of conceiving twins, but you may be curious if there is anything you can do to naturally increase your chances of having twins.

How are twins conceived?:

Most twins are fraternal.  Fraternal twins develop from two separate eggs.  Identical twins are rare and happen as a result of just one egg which splits sometime in early pregnancy.  Fraternal twins are conceived when two eggs are released during ovulation whereas identical twins are more of a random fluke.

Can you increase your chances of having twins?:

Yes, there are some things that will increase your chances of having twins, but some of these things are really out of your control.  Having a family history of twins will increase your chances of having twins.

This is true if you have a family history of twins, meaning someone on your mother’s side or father’s side of the family has had twins, especially if they had fraternal twins.  If your partner has twins in his family, it doesn’t help you any.

The reason being is that there may be some genetic component that may cause you to produce more than one egg during ovulation.  This “twin gene” may be passed down from your parents to you. Identical twins are not thought to be hereditary.

Other factors that may affect your chances of having twins are your ethnicity and your age.  African American women are more likely to conceive twins than Caucasian women.

And, Asian women have a lower chance of conceiving twins.  Twins are also more common in older women.

Things you can do to naturally increase your chances of having twins:

     1.  Take a folic acid supplement:

There have been a few studies on the link between folic acid and conceiving twins.  One Australian study found that women who took folic acid before they got pregnant were more likely to conceive twins.

In fact, according to this study, you may have a 40% or greater chance of conceiving twins if you take folic acid while you are trying to conceive.  Some other studies have shown contradictory results making it hard to say for sure if folic acid actually increases your odds of conceiving twins.

Nevertheless, folic acid also helps to prevent neural tube defects so it is a good idea to take a folic acid supplement (or a multi vitamin with folic acid) even if you aren’t trying to conceive twins. 2.

    2. Gain weight:

A study published in the March 2005 issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology found that women who were overweight had a higher chance of having twins.  Women who were tall also had a higher chance of having twins.

    3. Eat dairy products:

According to a recent study by Dr. Gary Steinman, a physician at Long Island Jewish Medical Center who is well known for research on multiple birth pregnancies, women who eat dairy are five times more likely to conceive twins than women who don’t.  Dr. Steinman’s study compared women who ate a regular diet with vegan women and vegetarian women who consumed dairy products.  Vegans appear to be less likely to conceive twins according to the study.

But, it may not be so much that consuming dairy increases your chances of having twins; but rather, that consuming milk or other dairy products from growth hormone treated cows increases your chances of having twins.

   4. Continue breastfeeding:

If you are breastfeeding and would like to conceive twins, you may want to hold off on weaning your little one.  According to one twin study, women who were breastfeeding when they conceived were nine times more likely to conceive twins than women who are were not breastfeeding.

how to conceive fast

7 tips to conceive a baby faster:

It can seem to be a little frustrating for you if your home pregnancy test kit shows no result, despite experiencing some of the early pregnancy symptoms.

While nobody knows the right way to make you pregnant, a lot depends on your lifestyle habits and health status. In fact, the entire process of trying for a baby is a trial and error method. However, here are a few tips that could help you conceive soon.

Have sex more often: This is no surprise for you. But know that mindless sex will only lead to more disappointment. So it is important for you to know when to have sex to conceive soon. Ideally you need to have sex during the most fertile days of your menstrual period. Don’t just restrict yourself from having sex in the night after a hard day’s work.

This could just make you more stressed which can cloud your chances of conception. If you are keen on conceiving, plan for a short vacation and get intimate with your partner. Try making love a couple of times during the day, as well as the night.

This will increase your chances of conception. Here is what you should know about timing your sex to get pregnant soon.

Keep track of your fertile days:

To know when you need to have sex to conceive a baby it is crucial that you keep a track of your most fertile days. This isn’t an easy job and would call for some attention from your side. In the urban setting, most women tend to have irregular cycles what with all the stress of staying ahead in the competitive world while striving hard to achieve a work-life balance. To check on your most fertile days keep track of your menstrual cycles at least for a couple of months. Here are few more tips to keep track of your ovulation.

Here is how you can do it:

  • In most cases if a woman has irregular cycles it could last for either for 26 days (short cycle) or 32 days (longer cycle).
  • Subtract 18 from the number of days of your shortest cycle. For e.g. if your shortest cycle is 26 it would be 8.
  • Subtract 11 from the number of days of your longest cycle. For e.g. if your longest cycle is 32 it would be 21.
  • Circle the dates on your calendar that fall between the first and second cycle days you calculated. For, e.g., in this case it would be the days from 7 and 22 i.e. 7th day after your periods to the 22nd day of the cycle. Now these are the days when you should try for conception.
Get creative in the bed:

Trying different sex positions can help you to spice up your sex-life. However, keep in mind that no matter whatever sex position you try when the man ejaculates, the sperm goes directly into the cervical mucus and the fallopian tube.

The point to try a new position is to make your sex life more fun, enjoyable and interactive. This helps to combat performance anxiety in bed when both partners are trying something new. This takes the stress out of the act that could be a probable culprit that interferes with conception. Here are eight best sex position that could help you to conceive soon.

Shun your vices:

Planning a pregnancy while indulging into smoking and drinking along with heavy intake of caffeine can come in the way of conception. This is because nicotine and alcohol affect both male and female fertility adversely. Caffeine doesn’t spare you from the same either.

Try some exercise:

If you are planning a pregnancy try losing some weight first if your weighing scale reveals a different story about your health. Obesity can hamper your desires to get pregnant.

This is because fat production, especially around the abdomen increases the amount of male sex hormones in the body and decreases ovulation. Know how you weight can interfere with getting pregnant.

Try and avoid stress:

Stress among other problems makes conception difficult for you. It not only intervenes with female fertility but also disrupts male fertility. It leads to decreased egg production in women and reduces sperm count in males. Keeping stress at bay should be your primary motive while trying for a baby.

Here are three ways how stress interferes with your conception.

Check your diet:

A balanced diet is one which gives you complete nutrition, giving you the adequate amount of proteins, minerals and micronutrients which in turn will help improve your chances of conception. Those who find it difficult to get pregnant can benefit with additional supplementation of micronutrients.
